What’s pigment dispersant and what’s their usage?

What is pigment dispersant?

A pigment dispersant is a surfactant or polymer compound added to pigment suspension systems (such as coatings, inks, plastic masterbatch) as an additive to improve the dispersion and stability of pigments.

The main function of organic pigment dispersants

1. Wetting effect: Reduce the interfacial tension between the pigment surface and the carrier (resin, solvent, etc.), allowing the carrier to quickly penetrate into the gaps of the pigment aggregates.
2. Dispersion effect: By using mechanical energy (grinding) and chemical energy (adsorption), pigment aggregates are dissociated into primary particles.
3. Stabilizing effect (most critical): prevents dispersed particles from reuniting again. This is the core manifestation of the value of dispersants, mainly achieved through two mechanisms: charge repulsion and steric hindrance.

Main application areas

·Industrial coatings (automotive paint, metallic paint, plastic paint)
·Printing ink (offset, gravure, flexographic ink)
·Architectural Coatings
·Plastic coloring (masterbatch, color powder)
·Electronic chemicals (color photoresist, LCD display)
·Cosmetics (lipstick, eye shadow, etc.)
